Track an Activity

For Just Knock 1.0 Last reviewed:

Use an Activity to record a period with a start and an end. For example, create a Rule named Focus for your focus sessions.

On This Page

Create an Activity Rule

  1. Open Rules → New Rule and choose Activity.
  2. Enter the Rule name.
  3. Set a Start Trigger, or leave it empty to start manually.
  4. Leave End Trigger empty to use the Start Trigger for both starting and ending. Alternatively, assign a different End Trigger.
  5. If you want a fixed duration, turn on End automatically and choose the time.
  6. Tap Create Rule.

The new Rule is ready to use. It starts recording only when you perform its Start Trigger or tap Start.

Use One Trigger to Start and End

With a Start Trigger assigned and no separate End Trigger:

  1. Perform the Trigger on the main canvas to start the Activity.
  2. The Rule is now In progress.
  3. Perform the same Trigger again to end that Activity.
  4. Perform it a third time when you want to begin a new Activity.

If you leave both Triggers empty, use the buttons in Rules instead. An empty Trigger does not recognize arbitrary input.

Use Separate Start and End Triggers

Assign different inputs when you want distinct actions for starting and ending. Perform the Start Trigger to begin and the End Trigger to finish.

Before You Continue: When an Activity is already in progress, performing its separate Start Trigger ends the current record and immediately starts a new one. It does not simply stop timing. To stop, use the End Trigger or an End button.

If you assign exactly the same input to Start and End, it acts as a start/end toggle. Inputs that overlap without being identical cannot be saved together.

Start or End Manually

Open Rules and use Start or End beside an enabled Activity Rule. The button reflects whether that Rule is currently in progress.

You can also end from the main canvas: tap the in-progress Activities summary to expand it, then tap the stop-circle control beside the Activity you want to end. If there are more rows than fit, scroll the expanded list.

Several different Activity Rules can be in progress at once. Each Rule has at most one in-progress Activity.

End Automatically

Turn on End automatically in the Rule and choose a duration. For example, use 25 minutes for Focus. The Activity can still be ended early with its ending Trigger or a manual End control.

Changing the Rule's duration after an Activity has started does not change that record's original plan. Set the desired duration before starting the next Activity.

Automatic end and alerts are separate settings. To request an alert, also enable Alert when an Activity ends in Settings → Feedback & Alerts and allow notifications.

If the app is not active at the planned end time, it updates the record when you next open it, using the planned end time. A Lock Screen card can remain at zero until the app is active again. The card and notification are not the stored record itself.

Common Questions

Why can't I change the Triggers?

End the in-progress Activity first. Its Rule detail page prevents changing or removing Start and End Triggers while it is in progress. This also applies to switching back to a shared Trigger.

I started an Activity in the introduction. How do I stop it?

Perform the same Knock again on the main canvas. You can also use End in Rules or the main canvas's expanded Activities panel. Finishing the introduction does not itself end the Activity.

Does locking the phone stop my Activity?

No. An Activity is not ended just because you leave the main canvas or lock the phone. Return to the app to perform a Trigger, use an available Lock Screen End control, or let an automatic-end plan finish. Background input recognition is not supported.
