Set Up Knocks and Gestures

For Just Knock 1.0 Last reviewed:

Choose an input you can comfortably repeat. Start with a simple Trigger, then add Steps only when you need them.

Choose a Trigger Type

Open a Rule's Trigger, Start Trigger, or End Trigger, then choose a type:

  • Knock: a rhythm made from taps and holds with one to five fingers.
  • Gesture: one drawing or built-in multi-finger Gesture from your library.
  • Knock + Gesture: an ordered sequence of Knocks and Gestures.

Saving an input in its recorder is not always the final save. After choosing Use Knock or choosing a Gesture, tap Save Trigger in the editor. If you are creating a new Rule, finish with Create Rule too.

Record a Knock

  1. Choose Knock, then Record Knock if the recorder is not already open.
  2. Before recording, choose Sensitivity: Standard is the starting point; Strict requires closer timing; Loose allows more variation.
  3. Tap or hold on the recording area with one to five fingers. A Tap is a brief touch and release; a Hold keeps the fingers down longer. Repeat the same finger count and event type when you use the Knock later.
  4. Record one to eight events. A single one-finger Tap needs another event; a lone Hold or a multi-finger event can be a Knock.
  5. Pause to finish the sample. Recording finishes after 1.5 seconds of silence. You can also use Finish sample.
  6. Repeat the same rhythm for the second sample. If they differ, retry sample 2 or use Re-record sample 1 to begin again.
  7. When the samples are verified, tap Use Knock, then save the Trigger.

The first-use introduction requires two to eight events. The regular recorder allows one to eight with the single-Tap exception above.

Note: Sensitivity is saved with the recorded Knock. To change it for an existing Knock, record again with the desired Sensitivity selected before completing the samples. Changing Recognition Threshold in Settings does not change Knock timing tolerance.

Choose a Gesture

Choose Gesture → Choose Gesture. Use Drawing for single-finger drawings, or the 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 segments for multi-finger Gestures.

Multi-finger groups include Pinch & Spread, Rotate, and Swipe. Use the number of fingers and direction shown by the selected Gesture. A stationary multi-finger Tap or Hold is a Knock event, not a moving multi-finger Gesture.

Select the Gesture you want, then save the Trigger. Only enabled Gestures are available in the picker.

Create Your Own Drawing

  1. Open Settings → Input & Recognition → Gestures → New Gesture, or use New Gesture inside Choose Gesture.
  2. Keep the suggested name or enter your own, such as My Curve. The name cannot be empty.
  3. Draw a shape with one finger in a single stroke, without lifting midway.
  4. Repeat the same shape and drawing direction until three samples are ready.
  5. Tap Save Gesture.
  6. Assign the saved Gesture to a Rule's Trigger. Saving it in the library alone does not assign it to a Rule.

If a sample is too short, inconsistent, or too similar to an enabled Gesture, follow the message and try again. Use Start over to record a new set. Draw in a consistent direction; reversing the stroke is not necessarily the same Gesture. You do not have to draw in exactly the same screen position.

Build an Ordered Combination

  1. Choose Knock + Gesture.
  2. Use Add next step → Record Knock or Choose Gesture to add each Step.
  3. Build a sequence of two to eight Steps. Drag to arrange the order.
  4. To remove a Step, drag it to the trash area or use Delete Step from its menu.
  5. Preview the sequence and use Practice complete Trigger to check that you can perform it.
  6. Save the Trigger.

Perform every Step in the saved order, without long pauses between Steps. The sequence uses a two-second input timeout; if progress resets, try a shorter gap and repeat the full sequence.

If only one Step remains when you save, the editor asks to use it as a single Knock or Gesture. If no Steps remain, it asks to delete an existing Trigger or discard a new Trigger draft. These confirmations do not delete the Rule itself.

The editor may offer Undo after a Step deletion. This only restores that draft edit; it does not undo recorded Moments or Activities. Removing the last Step does not offer the same Undo recovery.

Preview and Practice Safely

Preview shows the saved input sequence. Practice asks you to perform it.

In the Trigger editor, use Practice Trigger or Practice complete Trigger. From a saved Rule, open its detail page and use Practice Start Trigger or, when available, Practice End Trigger. The Start label also appears for a Moment's Trigger.

Practice never changes your data. A structurally valid Trigger can be saved without passing Practice, but practicing helps you confirm that you can reproduce it. To make a real record afterward, return to the main canvas or use the Rule's manual button.

Common Questions

Why can't I save a Trigger that is already assigned or overlaps?

Two Rules cannot have the same Trigger. A complete Trigger also cannot be the beginning of another Trigger. For example, a Rule using a particular Gesture conflicts with another Rule that begins with that same Gesture and then continues.

The check includes disabled Rules. Disabling the other Rule alone may not resolve the conflict. Change or remove its Trigger, or choose a different input for the new Rule. Similar Knocks may also be rejected; choose a more distinct rhythm or event pattern.

Why do I have to record more than once?

The samples check whether you can repeat the input consistently. A Knock uses two samples; a custom drawing uses three. Keep the same rhythm, finger counts, event types, or drawing direction across samples.
